Operable Skylights by Solar Innovations®
Allow You To View The Sun & Stars From The Comfort Of Your Own Home
The operable skylight has a higher profile than the ridge vent and operates with the same continuous hinged system. This skylight too can be utilized in any glass structure. Whereas ridge vents are typically used in-system, an operable system can be placed into an existing traditional construction roof. If you are looking to bring fresh air into the room or extra daylight, an operable skylight, whether manual or motorized, is a very good solution. 4’0” x 8’0” is a typical size for a one bay operable skylight, with the maximum size being a four bay 4’0” x 16’0”. The performance ratings on an operable skylight are significantly higher for air, water, and structural.
Retractable skylights, which allow large amounts of air to enter the room, are also available and can be either manual or motorized. Rain sensors can work with the ridge vents and retractable skylights to signal when to close the skylight so that rain does not enter the space. To see a full description of this option please visit the retractable roof page.
No matter what type of operable unit is selected, the goal is the same: ventilation. The ideal design is to bring cool air into the structure through vertical windows and then push the hot air out through the roof by way of ridge vents. This technique is commonly used in greenhouses where air flow is critical to the health of the plants. The ventilation can also help to control the amount of humidity and moisture within the greenhouse. These techniques also work well in the sunrooms, conservatories, and pool enclosures.
