Hung Windows by Solar Innovations®
Series 7300
Hung windows have been in existence since the 1600’s, and their invention is accredited to the famous scientist Robert Hooke. Ham House in England is one of the earliest examples of a house utilizing hung window. Vermeer’s painting The Milkmaid, from 1658, depicts a hung window in the background. At the time of their invention most hung windows were constructed out of timber with individual panels of glass being held in place by a grid.
A hung window consists of moveable sashes which hold glass in place. In the United States the sashes are known as panels, and the most common type of hung window is a double hung window. The window consists of two panels which can slide vertically. As one panel is pushed upward, it stays in place and does not fall down as one would expect with gravity.
Double hung windows allow both panels to be operable, sliding up and down within the frame. If a person is working at a table in front of a window and wants to open a window but does not wish for all their paperwork to blow away, the top panel can be slid downwards. Lowering the top panel slighting brings air into the top of the room and does not disturb the papers. Single hung windows are more economical because there is less hardware. The bottom window can be pushed up but the top is always fixed.
At the inception of hung windows the frames consisted of timber but today many options are available. Solar Innovations® constructs all hung windows, single and double, out of aluminum. The advantage of an aluminum window is the reduced maintenance work. An aluminum window will not rot, rust, warp, expand with heat, or require constant re-finishing. There are eight standard colors available along with any custom color your job may require; including two corrosion resistant anodized frame finishes.
The common thought is that aluminum windows are only suitable for commercial applications, but these windows are perfect for a home. If the aluminum needs to be hidden, wood veneer can be applied to the interior of the window to mimic the look of a wooden hung window. Available species include mahogany, pine, birch, fir, and other custom options.

Within the frame, numerous glazing options are available. Most often the windows are fitted with insulated, double pane glass. There are numerous varieties of glass to choose between including low-e’s and tinted glass. A low-e glass helps to reduce the amount of UV rays entering the room. The reduction in the rays assists in regulating temperature and minimizes the rate of fading to objects within the room such as furniture and window treatments.
If your home or business has existing double hung or single hung windows which are broken or inoperable, Solar Innovations® offers repair services. An installation crew can come to your project and are typically able to repair the broken windows. Should the windows be beyond repair, replacement windows are available. New windows can be designed and installed by a Solar Innovations® crew or one of their dealers nationwide.
