Solar Innovations, Inc. moved to a new facility in July 2009 (Press Release Attached) in Pine Grove, Pennsylvania, which is a Silver LEED pre-qualified facility. They intend to pursue Gold certification in the near future. The building was evaluated on many categories: Sustainable Site (site selection through construction), Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Innovation and Design.
Beyond these LEED factors, Solar Innovations® made environmentally conscious building choices like low VOC paint and carpet to help “green” the new facility and provide a healthy working environment. Each of their own products, including those which are Energy Star Certified, are incorporated into the overall building including several environmentally-specific conservatories, greenhouses, skylights, sunrooms and folding glass walls. The incorporation of their own structures, including a transom window pattern and a central four story vertical glass chimney maximizes ventilation and lighting, provides natural light and promotes lighting related and air handling cost reductions.
Heating and cooling are maximized through extremely high “R” value building envelopes, including R-40 insulation for the roof and R-29 for the side walls. As a result, no additional heat sources were required in the manufacturing plant until December 23rd for their 200,000 square foot facility. Motion censored lights control energy use. Low flow porcelain fixtures, as well as recycled content paper products, foam soap, and green cleaning products are also utilized in the new facility. The building’s landscape and grounds are cared for organically and include a compost pile for compostable organic materials. The entire building is controlled through a computerized “intelligent management system” to maximize resources and smooth energy management.
Solar Innovations® intends to continue to expand their environmentally-conscious endeavors. The company is awaiting LEED Certification in Maintenance and Operations, as well as Cradle-to-Grave certification. The Cradle-to-Grave Certification will provide them with a program to investigate and evaluate the environmental impacts of a given product or service caused or necessitated by its existence. Implementation of The Cradle-to-Grave Program will additionally provide the company with the ability to tangibly and credibly measure achievement in environmentally-intelligent design, supply chain management, and total lifecycle management.
Solar Innovations® reinforces their internal “3R” policies by monitoring all waste streams and deliberately outsourcing post production, packaging, office, and all other wastes into their waste management program. Through active management and conscious conservation methodology, Solar Innovations® funnels 90% of the waste into post-consumer recycling programs that are within 100 miles from their combined corporate and manufacturing site.
The seven month old recycling program has successfully and sustainably alleviated bottom-line costs associated with waste recovery costs. Garbage pickup was reduced from 4 pickups per month to one 6 yard container. This is a small container for a major manufacturer. Recycled material that is tracked include: sheet aluminum, office paper, aluminum siding, scrap aluminum, aluminum cans, insulated copper, hard and regular plastic, glass, cardboard, plastic stretch wrap, light-iron, scrap iron, painted sheet metal, aluminum turnings, extrusions, and thermal guard. These combined recyclables were quantified at 230,435 pounds of waste redirected from landfills to recycling streams.
Solar Innovations® encourages all employees to recycle through the company’s onsite program, further reducing waste streams, extending the reach of the “culture,” and educating their community while promoting “sustainability-based best practices.”
Solar Innovations® is striving to achieve carbon neutrality and is working towards 100% net zero landfill compliance by 2015 or sooner.
