Conservatory Blind Systems by Solar Innovations, Inc.

The addition of a Solar Innovations® glass structure to your home or business adds functional space with a beautiful view of your surroundings.  Sunrooms and conservatories can serve multiple purposes: a party room, a dining area, or an artist’s studio. As long as the environment within the structure is pleasant, the occupants can enjoy their time.

During the summer months, when the sun provides a greater level of direct sunlight, sunrooms and conservatories may experience an increase in temperature that exceeds the comfort level of its occupants.  Although window, doors, and vents increase air flow and provide an escape to hot air, the addition of a shading system can help to minimize the heat gain from the sun’s rays and provide glare control within the structure.

Exterior Shade Options

Interior Shade Options

Just like windows and doors, which generally have window treatments to control the light levels of the adjoining room, there are several shading options for sunrooms and conservatories.

  1. Type: Interior and exterior.
Shading can be placed on either the inside or outside of the structure. Placing the shading on the exterior will reduce the largest amount of heat because it blocks the sunlight from ever entering the structure. However, when the shades are on the exterior they have to contend with leaves, debris, rain, snow and the elements. Shading used on the interior is still very effective and greatly helps to reduce heat and glares.
  2. Operation: Fixed or Operable.
Fixed: Fixed shades are permanently attached to the structure’s framework. They do not move and will be in constant use.

Operable: Operable shades are available in two styles.
    • Roman pleated. If you decide to use interior shades you will utilize Roman pleated shades.  As the shades are operated they fold onto each other. This system is very similar to traditional Roman shades used on windows.
    • Roll up shades. This system is used on exterior shades. The shades are wound into a roll and released onto the greenhouse. They can be tied up again when not in use.
    • Materials. There are many shade materials available. There are shades specifically made for living spaces. Others are designed with high moisture in mind such as a pool enclosure or a greenhouse. Numerous color options and thread thickness are available as well.

Pinoleum Blinds
Pinoleum blinds are the original conservatory blind, developed in France; they have spread throughout the world. Historic conservatories utilized conservatory blinds, which are still popularly featured in English conservatories. The blinds can be used on both the roof and walls, and are comprised of individual reeds which are woven together; thin wood is used to minimize sag in the blinds. The wooden reeds can be painted or stained to achieve a custom coloration. The blinds are available in numerous colors, ranging from neutrals like dove gray to intense colors such as ginger cake. Custom colors are also available. When the blinds are pulled closed, natural daylight can still enter the conservatory, while reducing harsh glares. These shade systems also assist in regulating temperature. During the hot summer days, the blinds are extended and reduce the amount of heat gain inside the space.

Pinoleum Blind systems are operable, allowing them to be closed for shading or fully open to provide optimum daylight. The system can be hand operated or moved with the use of a motor. Each blind retracts to the eave in a Roman fold style. Blinds feature custom dimensions and are manufactured to fit your conservatory’s specific sizes. Intricate and unique shapes are also possible with Pinoleum blinds such as trap glass and valleys. Structures with high moisture levels, like a pool enclosures or greenhouse, are not suitable environments for Pinoleum blinds, as the wood may suffer damage.

Solar R Roller Blinds

Solar R Blinds
Solar blocking blind systems are shades which utilize an aluminum backing to reflect sunlight and heat. The system is available in neutral colors and earth tone shades such as straw, walnut, olive, and powder blue. Corresponding window blinds are also available. (see color chart pictured to the right)

Solar R Blinds are available in two styles: pleated and roller. The blinds retract into a cassette which is mounted at the eave line of the conservatory and pocket out od sight. This provides a sleek appearance, as all materials are hidden beneath the cassette. Blinds can be operated via a manual pull cord or motor (remote control functions are available for use with motorized units), reduce glare to the occupants of the space, and allow natural light to penetrate the room. Solar R Blinds are engineered to remain flat when retracted and will not crease when folded.

The knowledgeable staff at Solar Innovations, Inc. can work with contractors and architects to facilitate proper installation, no matter where the project is located. Please call Solar Innovations, Inc. at 800-619-0669 to speak with a customer service representative.

Wide Span Horizontal Shade Application

The wide span horizontal shade application is suited for flat surfaces or to span the eave of a conservatory (shown at left). Shades can be mounted directly to the eave or in a cassette mount where the blinds are concealed in a casing held at the eave. The blinds are designed in a Roman fold style. When extended they allow heat to be held above the system in the eave, while the living space remains cooler. On cool winter days, the shades can be retracted to allow sunlight and heat into the structure. Varying fabrics, colors, and textures are available.

Pleated gravity fed shades are a new style, compared to the pinoleum. This system is typically used on sloped roofs. The shades are mounted to the interior of the glass roof, and a manual pull moves them up and down. Shades are individually sized to fit between each section of rafter. Operation of the shade system can be motorized or manual. There are numerous materials and colors available.

Shading can also be applied to curtain walls and skylights. Blinds between glass are another viable option for heat and sunlight control for windows and doors. To discuss a shading project, please contact your Solar Innovations® representative.
